Crochet Infinity Scarf – Free Pattern

Preamble

WHAT YOU WILL CROCHET

This infinity scarf is made out of little stars worked together as you go.

FINISHED SIZE

My scarf is approximately 160 cm (63 inches) in diameter and approximately 20 cm (8) in width.

TENSION & GAUGE

If you have purchased a kit or are using the same yarn, then it is important that you match my tension and gauge, otherwise you will not have enough yarn.
10 cm down = 12 double crochet rows – 10 cm across = 18 double crochet stitches.
If you are using your own yarn, you DO NOT need to match my tension and gauge; however, you need to keep your tension the same throughout the project.

Easy.
The pattern has helpful hints along the way which are highlighted in bold.

MATERIALS & YARN REQUIREMENTS

3.5 mm hook
sewing needle
scissors
Vinnis Colours – DK Nikkim 100% cotton (50 grams/119 metres)
- Natural (colour A) – 150 grams,
- Various (colour B) – 10 grams each: Stone, Slate, Blue Grey, Grey, Dunes, Cappuccino, Sand, Camel, Golden Brown, Chestnut, Antique, Washed Denim, Pale Khaki, Khaki, Aluminium, Pale Saige, Olive

HELPFUL TIPS & PATTERN NOTES

My pattern uses US terminology.
Always read through the pattern before you start to familiarise yourself with it.
Colours are for reference only and will vary depending on the light settings of your monitor/devices.
The pattern was designed in cotton but can be made in any yarn. Just remember to use the correct hook size for the yarn you have chosen.
If you are working in thicker or thinner yarn your infinity scarf finished size may vary.
Tension and hook size could also influence the overall size.
I use standing stitches when I work; if you are not comfortable with making one, then you can replace it with a slip knot and the required number of chains (i.e., chain 3 for dc, chain 2 for hdc).
*.* / **.** indicates a repeat of a combination of stitches by the given number of times.
Stars are worked together as you go, and the scarf is joined at the end into an infinity scarf.
Secure starting ends as you go along.
And lastly, have loads of FUN.

Stitch/es	st/s	The stitch itself.
Three double crochet cluster stitch	3dc cl st	Yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over pull through all loops on hook (four), then close with a chain.

PATTERN

Using colour (B) yarn make a magic circle (or chain 4 and slip stitch into 1^st chain to make a ring).

Round 1

Ch 1 (does not count as st), *3 dc cl st (close with a ch), ch 1, into mc*, rep *.* 5 more times, ss into the closing ch of 1^st st (6 x 3dc cl st).

Round 2

Helpful hint: using colour (A) yarn join in any chain space from previous round with a slip stitch or replace the chain 2 with a standing double crochet. I make a chain two for the 1^st double crochet when I crochet as I think it looks neater than the “normal” way of making 3 chains to replace a double crochet – but it is up to you and will not make a difference to the design.

[Ch 2 (counts as 1^st dc), dc, ch 2, dc 2], *dc 2, ch 2, dc 2*, rep *.* 4 more times, ss into 1^st st (24 dc, 6 x ch 2).

Round 3

Helpful hint: when you skip stitches in this round make sure you do not miss counting the 1^st double crochet from the previous round which is sometimes hidden by the stitches just made in this round.

Ss into ch sp, [Ch 2 (counts as 1^st dc), dc 3, ch 2, dc 3] into same ch sp, *sk 2 sts, ss into next st, sk next st, [dc 3, ch 2, dc 3] into same sp*, rep *.* 4 more times, sk next 2 sts, ss into next st, ss into 1^st dc, cut yarn and weave in ends (36 dc, 6 x ch 2, 6 x ss).

When you have completed the first star the rest are joined as you go.

Follow the instructions for rounds 1 and 2 and when you do round 3 there is a slight change when making the ch 2 (between dc’s).

After finishing the 3^rd dc, ch 1, then pick up a finished star from your scarf and ss into any ch 2 sp, ch 1, then continue making the next 3 dc’s as normal. The photos should help, or you can google ways to join stars as you go. Depending on where the star is placed will depend on how many joins you need to make – some on just two sides, and some on more. Refer to the diagram for help on where to join the stars.

Helpful hint: when making the slip stitch into the chain space make it a bit loose so that it does not pull and it will be less visible.

For my infinity scarf I made 3 x 25 rows of stars, but you can make it as long and/or as wide as you like.

ADDING TASSELS

I added tassels to the “bottom” of my infinity scarf, which is optional. I used the colour from the middle and matched it up with the tassel, but you can do anything you like (go wild! 😊), I cut 4 strands approximately 20 cm (8 inches) in length, folded in half and threaded through the open end of a star. I then cut them all the same length. You can make pompoms, or long tassels or leave the tassels out.
