Part 6
BRINGING YOUR MELLY TEDDY RAGDOLL TO LIFE
You have made all the different body parts and motifs, now to bring your Melly Teddy Ragdoll to life. You do not need to follow these instructions exactly, this is just the way I like to put mine together, so is a suggestion only – the idea is to have FUN with the design, use your imagination and make yours unique.
ATTACHING THE UNICORN SHOES TO THE FRONT LEGS
Pin the shoes to the front legs and then use the tail end to sew the shoe to the bottom of the hoof, making sure that the shoe is attached correctly – with the opening of the shoe facing downwards. Weave in ends. Repeat to attach the second shoe.
ATTACHING THE FRONT LEGS
Helpful hint: when you attach the front legs make sure that the hoof shoes are facing the right way, opening of the shoe faces downwards.
Helpful hint: when attaching the front leg, starting at round 2 of the body, remember to ignore the two rounds done for the neck.
Place the body flat, making sure that the increase stitches are on either side. Attach the front legs by using the tail end from the front leg, sew the front leg to the body starting at round 2 of the body over the next 3 – 4 rounds – I sew the front and the back of the leg to make it more stable, through a loop on the body and the FLO of the last round of the front leg. The seam should be at the bottom of the “leg” section of the front leg. Weave in end.
Repeat to attach second front leg.
ATTACHING THE RAINBOW, SUN AND CLOUDS – BOTH
Pin the rainbow motif to the front of the body, over rounds 5 – 8, attach the rainbow to the body using the tail end.
Pin the sun motif to the bottom left side of the rainbow, slightly over the bottom of the rainbow, attach to the body using the tail end.
Pin the cloud motifs to the bottom right side of the rainbow, slightly overlapping each other and the bottom of the rainbow, attach to the body using the tail ends.
Weave in ends.
ATTACHING THE HEART – BOTH
Place the heart onto the back of the body over rows 11 – 13 (counting from the neck down) and sew onto the body using the tail end. Weave in ends.
ATTACHING THE TAIL – BOTH
Attach the tail to the back of the ragdoll, placing the tail in the middle. I used round 14 to attach the tail to and I used colours SWEET PEA and PURPLE HYDRANGEA. Weave in ends.
FINISHING THE BODY – BOY
Using the starting tail, whip stitch the opening between the legs of the body. Weave in ends.
ATTACHING THE LEGS – BOY
Helpful hint: there are 28 crab stitches on the bottom of each pants leg and 22 FLO single crochet stitches on each leg to join them together.
Using the tail end of the pants leg, whip stitch the 1st and 2nd crab sts of the pants leg to the 28th and 27th crab sts (on opposite side of the pants leg), then whip stitch the next 11 FLO sc sts of the leg to the next 11 crab sts of the pants leg, whip stitch the 14th and 15th crab sts together on the pants leg, turn your ragdoll around and whip stitch the remaining 11 FLO sc sts of the leg to the remaining 11 crab sts of the pants leg. Weave in ends.
Repeat to attach second leg.
ATTACHING THE LEGS AND FINISHING THE DRESS – GIRL
Pin the legs to the inside of the dress approximately 10 stitches apart. Using the tail end from the dress, whip stitch the legs to the bottom of the dress and whip stitch the opening of the dress closed between the legs. I use an inside loop of the stitches from round 23 (just before the last round of double crochet shells). Weave in ends.
ATTACHING THE UNICORN SHOES TO THE BACK LEGS – BOTH
Pin the shoes to the back legs and then use the tail end to sew the shoe to the bottom of the hoof, making sure that the shoe is attached correctly – with the opening of the U facing backwards/downwards. Weave in ends. Repeat to attach the second shoe.
ADDING THE EYELASHES, EYEBROWS, AND FINISHING THE EYES – GIRL
Using colour (BLACK), add eyelashes to each eye and eyebrows above each eye. You can add a little bit of makeup blush under her eyes to give her cheeks some colour, using a soft makeup brush. This is just a suggestion, you can do whatever you like with your ragdoll – embroider the eyes, use your imagination, they are your unique creation, and I cannot wait to see all your beautiful ragdolls. I added eyebrows to the boy, but you can finish the eyes anyway you would like. Weave in ends.
ATTACHING THE EARS TO THE HEAD
Pin the two ears onto the head approximately 11 visible stitches apart. I place my ears across rounds 29 and 30. Using the tail end from the ears, sew the ears to the head. Weave in ends.
ADDING THE BLUSH TO THE EARS AND CHEEKS – GIRL
This is optional. Use a makeup brush and blusher to add some colour to the inside of the ears.
ATTACHING THE HORN TO THE HEAD
I added a small amount of stuffing to the horn. Pin the horn onto the front centre of the head 10 visible rows counting from the change of colour for the nose. I placed the horn over rounds 21, 22 and 23. Using the tail end from the horn, sew it to the head. Weave in ends.
ATTACHING THE MANE TO THE HEAD – BOTH
Using a tailor’s pen (disappearing ink) and a ruler, mark where you want to add the mane, then using the tail ends attach the mane to the top of the head starting just behind the horn. I attached five pieces, colours CHERRY BLOSSOM, APRICOT, DAFFODIL, HONEYDEW MELON and FORGET-ME-NOT. Weave in ends.
ATTACHING THE FLOWER – GIRL
Pin the leaf to the left side of her head, just below the left ear. Using the tail end attach the bottom part of the leaf to the head, repeat with the second leaf, adding it slightly below the first leaf. Attach the rose to the head just above the two leaves. Weave in ends.
ATTACHING THE HEAD
I like to add the head last, because this is the most important join, and this is the last thing you do before your Melly Teddy Ragdoll comes to life; this is my favourite part. I use a disappearing ink marker to mark where I want my head to be placed, you can use stitch markers or pins to help you. Lay your body flat, and make sure that the middle of the head is exactly joined to the middle of the body, otherwise it will look funny and lie askew So, you are working “over” rounds 18 and 19 of the head, then using the tail end from the neck, whip stitch the body to the head using the FLO of the last round of the neck on both sides, cut yarn and weave in end.
