Part 6
BRINGING YOUR MELLY TEDDY RAGDOLL TO LIFE
You have made all the different body parts and motifs, now to bring your Melly Teddy Ragdoll to life. You do not need to follow these instructions exactly, this is just the way I like to put mine together, so they are suggestions only – the idea is to have FUN with the design, use your imagination and make yours unique.
ATTACHING THE SLEEVES TO THE BODY
Place the body flat, making sure that the increase stitches are on either side, then using the tail end from the sleeve, whip stitch the sleeve to the body starting at round 2 of the body over the next 3 – 4 rounds. I sew the front and the back of the sleeve to make it more stable, through a loop on the body and the FLO of the last round of the sleeve. The seam should be at the bottom of the sleeve. Weave in end. Repeat to attach second sleeve.
ATTACHING THE HANDS TO THE SLEEVES
With the thumbs facing upwards, place the hand into the sleeve opening (rib of top). Using the tail end from the sleeve, sew the hand into the sleeve, working into the BLO of 1st round of double crochet stitches (after the rib) on the sleeve and the FLO of the last round of the hand, leaving the rib section loose. Weave in end. Repeat to attach second hand.
FINISHING THE BODY
Using the starting tail, whip stitch the opening between the legs of the body. Weave in end.
ATTACHING THE STRAPS OF THE DUNGAREES AND ADDING THE BUTTONS
Using the long tails left at the end of the straps, slip stitch the straps to the body, crossing the straps at the back, and attaching to the back of the pants (where the colour change was made – row 8). When you get to the neck edge, slip stitch the straps on either side of the neck.
Attach the buttons to the front of the dungarees just below the 1st row of the straps.
ATTACHING THE PATCHES
I slip stitched the patch to one leg, where the knee would be, and I slip stitched the 2nd patch to the bum, on the opposite side to the leg I attached the 1st patch too. Using colour (BABY YELLOW) I then make large “stitches” over the patch to finish off the patched look 😊
ATTACHING THE HEART
Place the heart onto the front of the bib of the dungarees and sew onto the body using the tail end. Weave in ends.
ADDING THE PUMPKIN MOTIF TO THE DUNGEREES
Using the tail end of the pumpkin whip stitch the motif to the dungarees. Weave in ends.
ATTACHING THE BOOT TO THE FEET
Place the boot on the foot. Using the tail end from the boot, whip stitch the top of the boot to round 18 from the leg.
Repeat to attach second shoe to the other foot.
ADDING THE SHOELACES TO THE BOOTS
Place pins in the boot every alternate round. Using colour (ORANGE), make the shoelaces – I did mine in rows, but you can cross them over – use your imagination. I did not add a bow, but you can.
ATTACHING THE BACK LEGS
Helpful hint: there are 28 crab stitches on the bottom of each pants leg and 22 FLO single crochet stitches on each leg to join them together.
Using the tail end of the pants leg, whip stitch the 1st and 2nd crab sts of the pants leg to the 28th and 27th crab sts (on opposite side of the pants leg), then whip stitch the next 11 FLO sc sts of the leg to the next 11 crab sts of the pants leg, whip stitch the 14th and 15th crab sts together on the pants leg, turn your ragdoll around and whip stitch the remaining 11 FLO sc sts of the leg to the remaining 11 crab sts of the pants leg. Weave in end.
Repeat to attach second leg.
ADDING STRAW TO THE HANDS AND LEGS
Helpful hint: this is optional
Using colour (NATURAL) cut 40 pieces approximately 10 cm (4 inches) long. Take two pieces, fold the yarn in half and use a hook to attach the “straw” to the top of the hand, and legs. I used 5 x 2 pieces for each hand and each leg. Then I used a small pets brush and feathered the yarn, so it resembled straw.
FINISHING THE PUMPKIN
Using the tail end from the pumpkin stitch around the pumpkin in 6 sections, going through the middle of the pumpkin each time and pull tight to make the segments of a pumpkin, sew the stalk to the centre of the pumpkin. Repeat with the vine. Weave in ends.
ATTACHING THE NOSE/ ADDING THE MOUTH AND EYEBROWS
Pin the nose to the centre of the head, between the eyes. Use the tail end to whip stitch the nose to the face. Weave in ends.
Using black yarn embroider the eyebrows two rows above the safety eyes over three stitches.
Click HERE to see how I embroidered my mouth. This is not my tutorial, but she did a good job showing me how to make mine.
ATTACHING THE HAIR TO THE HEAD
Using the tail end from the hair, sew the hair onto the top of the head. Weave in ends.
ATTACHING THE HAT TO THE HEAD
Cut a piece of colour (WASHED DENIM) approximately 3 times the width of the brin of the hat, then stitch the hat to the hair using the BLO from round 18. Weave in ends.
ADDING SUNFLOWERS AND LEAVES TO THE HAT
Use the tail ends of the sunflowers and leaves to attach them to the hat. You can add them in any way. I added a leaf and then a sunflower and repeated twice.
ATTACHING THE HEAD
This is my favourite part! I like to add the head last, because this is the most important join, and the last thing you do before your Melly Teddy Ragdoll comes to life.
I use a disappearing ink marker to mark where I want to attach the head, you can use stitch markers or pins to help you. Lay your body flat and pin the body to the head over rounds 39 – 41 of the head. This is about 18 rounds from before the close last round of the back of the head. Attach the middle of the head to the middle of the body, otherwise it will look funny and lie askew. then using the tail end from the neck, whip stitch the body to the head using the FLO of the last round of the neck on both sides. Weave in end.
TAH DAH – YOUR TOBIAS SCARECROW RAGDOLL IS DONE!
