PATTERN PART 9

PATTERN NOTES:

  • Weave in all starting tails before you sew the various applique pieces to the front of your blanket.
  • Sew your applique pieces to the front loop only of the stitches on the blanket. I have included links to two video tutorials that will help you attach the applique neatly.  You will not see the stitches on the back of the blanket if you use this technique.  The videos are not mine.

Click HERE – How to attach crochet appliques by Planet June (she has several options)

ATTACHING THE BODY

Place your blanket on a flat surface with the front facing you, then place a stich marker in the middle stitch of round 2 (above the magic circle) of the blanket (4th stitch from either corner).  Then place a stitch marker in the middle stitch of round 9 (below the magic circle of the blanket (18th stitch from either corner).

Then pin the body to the blanket placing the top of the body below the 1st stitch marker and the bottom of the body above the 2nd stitch marker.  The sides of the body will cover from round 6 on the right to round 6 on the left.

Using the tail end and the technique suggested in the video links, carefully sew the body to the blanket.  Weave in ends.

Once completed your work should look like this, you can remove the stitch markers.

ATTACHING THE FRONT LEGS AND HOOVES

Place a stitch marker into the middle stitch (below the body) of round 13

place a stich marker in the middle stitch of round 13 (below the body) of the blanket (21st stitch from either corner).

Place one hoof on either side of the stitch with the stitch marker in it and pin the hooves to the blanket.

Then pin the front legs to the blanket.  The bottom of the leg applique should fall close to the hoof, and the top should reach round 10 of the body, approximaltey 3 to 4 visible stitches apart.  Then using the tail end sew both legs to the body/blanket. Weave in ends.

Then using the tail end from each hoof, sew it to the blanket making sure that the top of the hoof reaches the bottom of each front leg.  Weave in ends.

ATTACHING THE BACK LEGS AND HOOVES

Pin each hoof on the outside of the front legs, at a slight angle.  The hooves should fall over rounds 9 and 10 of the blanket, pin the back legs to the bottom of the body, on either side of the front legs approximately 3 visible stitches apart.  Using the tail end sew the back legs to the blanket.  Weave in ends.  Sew the hooves to the blanket. Weave in ends.

ATTACHING THE NOSE

I used a tailors (disappearing ink) pen to mark where I want the eyes, just to give me an idea of where the nose should be attached.  I drew the eye by making a shallow curve, starting from round 3 (to the right of the magic circle) and ending on round 7 and approximately 6 rounds from the bottom of the head).  Repeat on the other side.  Later I changed the eyelashes, but the most imporaant thing at this point is to get an idea of where the eyes will be embroidered so that we can add the nose.

Pin the nose to the bottom of the face.  The bottom of the nose should fall over the last round of the face and cover approximately the last 4 rounds of the face.

Using the tail end sew the nose to the face.  Weave in end.

ATTACHING THE CHEEKS

Pin each cheek to either side of the nose, about 1 visible stitch above the nose and 1 visable stitch between the cheek and the last round of the face.  Using the tail end sew the cheeks to the face.  Weave in ends.

FINISHING THE EYES

Fold the face in half, and place pins where you want the eyes to be embroidered.  I placed the inside pins between round 3 and 4 and the outside pins between rounds 7 and 8.

Make an upwards curve if you want your eyes to look like mine, or a downwards curve if you prefer your eyes and eyelashes to look like the second photo.

Using black yarn or embroidery thread add the eyes and eyelashes.  This is only a suggestion, you can make your eyes/eyelashes any way you like.  There are loads of suggestions on YouTube.  Click HERE to see the way I made mine.

ATTACHING THE HEAD

Pin the head onto the body and blanket.  The top of the head should reach round 6 and the bottom of the head (where the nose is) should lie just above the magic circle of the body.  Using the tail end sew on the head.  Weave in end.

This is what the unicorn looks like so far.

ATTACHING THE HORN

Pin the horn to the centre top of the head.  The bottom of the horn should sit next to the last round of the head.  Using the tail end sew the horn to the blanket.  Weave in end.

ATTACHING THE TAIL

You made 3 tail pieces.  You can add them in any order.  Pin the 1st piece to the blanket, with the tail end of the piece next to the body about 6 visible stitches between where the body ends and the head starts.  Using the tail end sew the tail to the blanket.  Weave in end.

Pin the 2nd piece directly below the 1st piece.  Using the tail end sew the tail to the blanket.  Weave in end.

Pin the 3rd  piece directly below the 2nd piece.  Using the tail end sew the tail to the blanket.  Weave in end.

ATTACHING THE FLOWER AND LEAVES

Pin the two leaves to the top left hand corner of the blanket (your left) on either side of the corner stitches.  Using the tail end sew the leaves to the blanket.  Weave in ends.

Pin the 1st  flower to the space above the two leaves.  Using the tail end sew the flower to the blanket.  Weave in end.

Pin the 2nd flower below the 1st flower.  Using the tail end sew the flower to the blanket.  Weave in end.

ATTACHING THE CLOUDS AND THE SUN

Pin the two clouds to the right hand corner of the blanket (your right) on either side of the corner stitches.  I placed mine close enough to touch.  Using the tail ends attach the clouds to the blanket.  Weave in ends.

Pin the sun to the blanket by placing it above the clouds, over the corner stitches.  I placed some of the sun’s rays over the clouds.  Using the tail end sew the sun to the blanket.  Weave in end.

ATTACHING THE EARS

Pin each ear to either side of the horn.  The bottom of the ear should overlap the last round of the head.  Using the tail ends sew the ears to the blanket.  Weave in ends.

ADDING NOSTRILS

Using black yarn or embroidery thread make two nostrils on either side of the nose.  I placed mine on either side of the chains (from the nose), making the stitch for each nostril the same size as a stitch.  Cut yarn and weave in ends.

ADDING THE MANE

You made 3 mane pieces.  You can add them in any order.  Pin the 1st piece to the top of the head, just below the horn.  One end just below the ear on your left, and the other end over the ear on the right.  Using the tail end sew the tail to the head.  Weave in end.

Pin the 2nd piece directly below the 1st piece.  Using the tail end sew the mane to the head.  Weave in end.

Pin the 3rd  piece directly below the 2nd piece.  Using the tail end sew the mane to the head.  Weave in end.
