PATTERN PART 1
IMPORTANT PATTERN NOTE:
If you are working with a cake yarn or in one colour, do not fasten off your yarn at the end of each round, just slip stitch to the indicated stitch or corner space and continue. In certain rounds you might need to cut your yarn and re-join.
Round 1
Helpful hint: make the slip stitches loosely so that your work does not pull tight in the corner.
Helpful hint: If you do not know how to make a magic circle you will find a link to how I make one in the pattern preamble under abbreviations. Remember to tighten the magic circle after round 1.
Using colour (PURPLE HYDRANGEA), make a magic circle.
Ch 1 (does not count as a st), *dc 3, ch 2 into the mc* rep *.* 3 more times, ss into 1st st, ss until ch 2 corner (3 dc per side) (ch 2 per corner), DO NOT cut yarn.
Total stitch count: 12 (excluding chains)
Round 2
Helpful hint: work your last three double crochet stitches into the stitched from the previous round, but under the slip stitches, that way the slip stitches fall to the back of your work, and you will not see them from the front.
Helpful hint: be careful not to miss the first stitch (hidden stitch).
[Ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), dc, ch 2, dc 2] into ch 2, dc into next 3 sts, *[dc 2, ch 2, dc 2] into ch 2, dc into next 3 sts* rep *.* 2 more times , ss into 3rd ch, ss until ch 2 corner (3 dc per side)(dc 2, ch 2, dc 2 per corner), DO NOT cut yarn.
Total stitch count: 28 (excluding chains)

IMPORTANT PATTERN NOTE:
When I end with one colour yarn and start with another colour yarn, I will finish off the round with the following instruction:
- “ss into 1st st (st count), cut yarn and weave in ends”
- OR you can finish with a needle join
If you DO NOT know how to make a needle join, please refer to the abbreviations which are in the pattern preamble.
Round 13
[Ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), dc, ch 2, dc 2] into ch 2, dc into next 47 sts, *[dc 2, ch 2, dc 2] into ch 2, dc into next 47 sts* rep *.* 2 more times, ss into 3rd ch (47 dc per side) (dc 2, ch 2, dc 2 per corner), cut yarn and weave in ends.

IMPORTANT PATTERN NOTE:
Give your square a gentle block to make sure it is nice and square. This will make it easier for when you attach the applique in Part 9.
