PATTERN – MELLY TEDDY RAGDOLL DOCTOR NATALIE

PART 6

BRINGING YOUR MELLY TEDDY RAGDOLL TO LIFE

You have made all the different body parts and decoration, now to bring your Melly Teddy to life.

You do not need to follow these instructions exactly, it is just the way I like to put mine together, so is a suggestion only – the idea is to have FUN with the design, use your imagination and make yours unique.

Attaching the Arms

Helpful hint: before you attach the arms etc to the body, lay the body flat making sure that the seam is lying to one side of the body and not at the back – the reason I designed the body like this is so that the seam is not as noticeable as when it is at the back.

Place the body flat, making sure that the increase stitches made are on either side of the body (this makes them less visible), the seam of the sleeve should be at the bottom of the arm, I slip stitch the opening at the top of the sleeve so that it is easier to slip stitch to the body, then attach sleeves to the body between rows 2 and 5 – I slip stitch the front and the back of the arm to make it more stable.

Attaching the Legs/Sneakers

Slip stitch the legs/shoes to the middle of the bottom of the pants, and slip stitch the opening of the pants at the same time, slip stitch the opening between the legs, cut yarn, weave in ends.  You can add shoelaces to the sneakers.

Attaching the Heart

Stitch the heart to the top of the body, where a heart is supposed to be.

Attaching the Lab Coat

Attach the sleeves to the opening of the robe, put the coat on the ragdoll – you can leave as it is so that it can be removed, or you can slip stitch the robe to the ragdoll by attaching it around the neck and shoulders.  Carefully attach the pockets on either side of the coat and turn the corners at the neck down and slip stitch them to the coast to make lapels.  I attached the cross to the back of the lab coat.

Adding the Nose, Mouth and Eyebrows.

Using the same colour as the hair, I make an eyebrow above the eyes, approximately 3 stitches long. I start two rows above the eye.  The eyebrows are about 8 stitches apart from each other.

Using the same colour yarn as the face, I make a nose over 3 stitches, by going over the area with the yarn 6 to 8 times, pulling very gently – a bit like a statin stitch in embroidery.  The stiches are worked over each other and all in the same space.  I make the nose between the eyes, 1 row below the eyes.

Using some pink yarn, I do the exact same stitch for the mouth as I used for the nose, however I make 2 stitches on top of each other, 3 rows below the nose, over 3 stitches.

This is just a suggestion, you can do whatever you like with your ragdoll – embroider the eyes, use your imagination, she/he is your unique creation.

Attaching the Hair/Surgical Cap

Slip stitch the hair onto the head along the edge of the ‘cap’ part of the hair, leaving the hair strands loose – I left my doll’s hair down, but you can put it into a bun, make plaits or tie in a pony tail.

You can slip stitch the scrub cap onto the head/hair or leave it tied at the back so that it can be removed.  Add the mask and tie the ends around the back of the head to secure.  I embroidered an E R on the cap, which is optional.

Attaching the Stethoscope together

Attach the “bell” to the “drum” part of the stethoscope. Add a pipe cleaner into each side of the binaural, attach the “ear tips” by using colour (H) yarn, then attach the “binaural” to the “tubing” section of the stethoscope.

Attaching the Head

I like to add the head last, because this is the most important join, and this is the last thing you do before your Melly Teddy Ragdoll comes to life, this is my favourite part.  I use a disappearing ink marker to mark where I want my head to be placed, you can use stitch markers or pins, to help you.  Slip stitch the neck opening, like you did the arms and the feet, then lie your body flat, and make sure that the middle of the head is exactly joined to the middle of the body, otherwise it will look funny, and lie skew.  So, you are working “over” the centre of the end of the head, then slip stitch the body to the head, on both sides, cut yarn and weave in.

Just add the stethoscope and voila – your doctor, surgeon or nurse is ready for his/her forever home.

MY STORY

  • I have not been crocheting for long, but the first time I picked up a hook, some yarn, and a pattern to make a beautiful blanket, I was, as they say, hooked.
  • When my little girl told me that she felt snuggled in my love when lying under one of the blankets I crocheted for her, it occurred to me that she was right.
  • When we make something for someone else, we spend lots of time thinking about that person, and we pour our love, passion, and creativity into the item.
  • I love to play with patterns and colours and create something unique and beautiful for people I love, and I am sure you do too.
  • My patterns are easy to read, with loads of photo tutorials to help even the most inexperienced crafter.  I will be launching YouTube video tutorials soon to help reading my patterns.
