PATTERN – MELLY TEDDY RAGDOLL LUNA THE WITCH & ECLIPSE THE BLACK CAT

PART 6

BRINGING YOUR MELLY TEDDY RAGDOLL TO LIFE

You have made all the different body parts and decoration, now to bring your Melly Teddy to life.

You do not need to follow these instructions exactly, it is just the way I like to put mine together, so is a suggestion only – the idea is to have FUN with the design, use your imagination and make yours unique.

Attaching the Arms

Helpful hint: before you attach the arms etc to the body, lay the body flat making sure that the seam is lying to one side of the body and not at the back – the reason I designed the body like this is so that the seam is not as noticeable as when it is at the back.

Place the body flat, making sure that the increase stitches made are on either side of the body (this makes them less visible), the seam of the sleeve should be at the bottom of the arm, I slip stitch the opening at the top of the sleeve so that it is easier to slip stitch to the body, then attach sleeves to the body between rows 2 and 5 – I slip stitch the front and the back of the arm to make it more stable.

Do the same with the cat arms, but over row 2 and 3 from the neck.  You can add “toes” to the front and back paws and noted in the photo – I used colour (G) yarn to add “shape” to my paws.

Attaching the Legs/Petticoat/Back Paws and Tail

Slip stitch the legs to the middle of the bottom of the petticoat, and slip stitch the opening of the petticoat closed at the same time, then attach the petticoat to the skirt of the body and slip stitch the skirt closed at the same time.

Slip stitch the opening between the legs of the cat, attach the back paws to the bottom or the legs of the body, attach the tail to the back of the body one row above the crotch area, cut yarn, weave in ends.

Attaching the Heart

Stitch the heart to the top of the body, where a heart is supposed to be for the Witch and the Cat.

Adding the Nose and Mouth

Using the same colour yarn as the face, I make a nose over 3 stitches, by going over the area with the yarn 6 to 8 times, pulling very gently – a bit like a statin stitch in embroidery.  The stiches are worked over each other and all in the same space.  I make the nose between the eyes, 1 row below the eyes.

Using some pink yarn, I do the exact same stitch for the mouth as I used for the nose, however I make 2 stitches on top of each other, 3 rows below the nose, over 3 stitches.

This is just a suggestion, you can do whatever you like with your ragdoll – embroider the eyes, use your imagination, she/he is your unique creation.

Adding the Nose, Ears and Eyes to the Cat

Attach the nose to the head over rows 16 – 22 in height (approximately 8 sts in width), slightly stuffing it.  Slip stitch the eyes into place approximately 8 sts apart (between the middle of the eyes), at a slight angle, placing the side with the white towards the bottom, on either side of the head, and add the ears to the top of the head approximately 6 sts apart over rows 4 – 10.  I use pins to place the items before stitching to the head. I also used colour (G) yarn to embroider a little nose to give definition – and you can add whiskers if you like.  I choose not to.

Attaching the Hair & Hat

Slip stitch the hair onto the head along the edge of the ‘cap’ part of the hair, leaving the hair strands loose.

Put the hat on the dolls head – and to give it a nice curl I added a pipe cleaner before stitching the hat to the head.  You slip stitch the hat to the hair/head or leave it so that it comes off.

Shaping the Pumpkin and adding the Stalk and Vine

Using the same colour as the pumpkin stitch around the pumpkin in 8 sections going through the middle each time and pull tight to make the segments of a pumpkin, I did it twice so as to make it nice and secure, slip stitch the stalk to the centre of the top of the pumpkin and add the two vines.

Attaching the Head

I like to add the head last, because this is the most important join, and this is the last thing you do before your Melly Teddy Ragdoll comes to life, this is my favourite part.  I use a disappearing ink marker to mark where I want my head to be placed, you can use stitch markers or pins, to help you.  Slip stitch the neck opening, like you did the arms and the feet, then lie your body flat, and make sure that the middle of the head is exactly joined to the middle of the body, otherwise it will look funny, and lie skew.  So, you are working “over” the centre of the end of the head, then slip stitch the body to the head, on both sides, cut yarn and weave in.

(Photos are of the Pilot Bear but the technique is the same).

Wrap the collar around the cat’s neck, and slip stitch the collar to the neck, then attach the buckle.
