GIANT PANDA  BEAR PART 5

BODY – BOY

Not stuffed, using colour (A) yarn chain 32 and ss into the first chain to make a circle.

Helpful hint: the chain 1 at the beginning of each row does not count as a stitch, but it is important to make the chain 1, and you will see why as we go along – it makes a nice straight seam – make the chain 1 loose otherwise the seam will “pull” up on this side.

Round 1

Ch 1, dc into same ch, dc 14, 3 dc into next ch, dc 15, 3 dc into next ch, ss into 1st dc (36 dc), cut yarn, make a nj, and weave in ends.

Helpful hint: change to colour (B).

Round 2

Join new yarn into 1st dc from previous round, ch 1, dc into same st, dc 16, 2 dc into next st, dc 17, 2 dc into next st, ss into 1st dc (38 dc).

Round 3

Ch 1, dc into same st, dc 17, 2 dc into next st, dc 18, 2 dc into next st, ss into 1st dc (40 dc).

Round 4

Ch 1, dc into same st, dc 18, 2 dc into next st, dc 19, 2 dc into next st, ss into 1st dc (42 dc).

Round 5

Ch 1, dc into same st, dc 19, 2 dc into next st, dc 20, 2 dc into next st, ss into 1st dc (44 dc).

Round 6

Round 14 – work in the BLO for this round

Join new yarn into 1st dc from previous round, ch 1, dc into same st, dc 28, 2 dc into next st, dc 29, 2 dc into next st, ss into 1st dc (62 dc BLO).

Round 15

Ch 1, dc into same st, dc 29, 2 dc into next st, dc 30, 2 dc into next st, ss into 1st dc (64 dc).

Round 16

Ch 1, dc into same st, dc 30, 2 dc into next st, dc 31, 2 dc into next st, ss into 1st dc (66 dc).

Round 17

Ch 1, dc into same st, dc 31, 2 dc into next st, dc 32, 2 dc into next st, ss into 1st dc (68 dc).

Round 18

Ch 1, dc into same st, dc 32, 2 dc into next st, dc 33, 2 dc into next st, ss into 1st dc (70 dc).

FIRST LEG

Round 19

Ch 1, dc into same st, dc 13, skip 42, dc 14, ss into 1st dc (28 dc).

Round 20 – 23

Ch 1, dc into same st, dc 27, ss into 1st dc (28 dc), cut yarn, make a nj, and weave in ends.

Helpful hint: change to colour (E).

Round 24

Join new yarn into 1st dc from previous round, sc into next 28 sts (28 sc).

Round 25

Ch 1, crab stitch into the same st, crab stitch into next 27 sts, ss into 1st crab st (28 crab sts), cut yarn leaving a 15cm tail to use later when we attach the leg at the end of the pattern.

SECOND LEG

Helpful hint: skip 7 stitches from round 18 after the first leg, join yarn (D) to the 8th double crochet with a slip stitch, leave a long tail which you will use to stitch the opening between the legs at the end of the pattern.

Round 19

Ch 1, dc into same st, dc 27, ss into dc (28 dc).

Round 20 – 23

Ch 1, dc into same st, dc 27, ss into 1st dc (28 dc), cut yarn, make a nj, and weave in ends.

Helpful hint: change to colour (E).

Round 24

Join new yarn into 1st dc from previous round, sc into next 28 sts (28 sc).

Round 25

Ch 1, crab stitch into the same st, crab stitch into next 27 sts, ss into 1st crab st (28 crab sts), cut yarn leaving a 15cm tail to use later when we attach the leg.

BELT

Using colour (E) yarn, chain 20 sts, then sc along the FLO of round 14 (62 sc), then chain 20, cut yarn.

Helpful hint: this is the belt for the tai chi pants, you can pull the ends of the chain’s nice and tight and cut off, or weave in the ends, then make a knot using the chained ties – belt done.

NECK

Using colour (A) join yarn to round 1 of the body with a slip stitch.

Helpful hint: join yarn at one side of the neck at the top of the opening (where we are going to attach the head).

Round 1

Ch 1, sc into same st, sc 31 along the neck ch, ss into 1st sc (32 sc).

Round 2

Ch 1, sc into same st, sc into next st, *sc2tog, sc into next 2 sts*, rep *.* 6 more times, sc2tog, ss into 1st sc (24 sc), ss the neck closed, cut yarn leaving a long tail to use to attach the head to the body.

BODY – GIRL

Not stuffed, using colour (A) yarn chain 32 and ss into the first chain to make a ring.

Helpful hint: work into the outside loop of the chain for this round, we will use the inside loop of the chain later when we are finished with the body.

Helpful hint: change to colour (F) and work next round in the back loop only (BLO).

Round 3

Join new yarn into BLO of 1st dc from previous round, ch 1, dc into same st, dc 17, 2 dc into next st, dc 18, 2 dc into next st, ss into 1st dc (40 dc BLO).

Round 4

Ch 1, dc into same st, dc 18, 2 dc into next st, dc 19, 2 dc into next st, ss into 1st dc (42 dc).

Round 5

Ch 1, dc into same st, dc 19, 2 dc into next st, dc 20, 2 dc into next st, ss into 1st dc (44 dc).

Round 6

Ch 1, dc into same st, dc 20, 2 dc into next st, dc 21, 2 dc into next st, ss into 1st dc (46 dc).

Round 7

Ch 1, dc into same st, dc 21, 2 dc into next st, dc 22, 2 dc into next st, ss into 1st dc (48 dc).

Round 8

Ch 1, dc into same st, dc 22, 2 dc into next st, dc 23, 2 dc into next st, ss into 1st dc (50 dc).

Round 9

Round 15

Ch 1, dc into same st, dc 29, 2 dc into next st, dc 30, 2 dc into next st, ss into 1st dc (64 dc).

Round 16

Ch 1, dc into same st, dc 30, 2 dc into next st, dc 31, 2 dc into next st, ss into 1st dc (66 dc).

Round 17

Ch 1, dc into same st, dc 31, 2 dc into next st, dc 32, 2 dc into next st, (68 dc), cut yarn, make a nj, and weave in ends.

Helpful hint: we will be making the edge band now and will then continue with the last 2 rounds of the kimono after we make the band.

EDGE BAND FOR KIMONO – GIRL

Using colour (G) yarn ss into the FLO of the 6th sc from round 2, ch 1.

Helpful hint: work with the neck edge facing towards your body, then count 5 stitches from the two single crochet increase on the side of the body from round 2 and start in the 6th stitch, work into the front loop only.

Row 1

Make a dc into the same FLO, and a dc into next 2 sts FLO, ch 2, turn (3 dc).

Row 2

Dc into the next 2 sts, ch 2 (3 dc).

Helpful hint: the chain 2 from the previous row counts as a double crochet stitch.

Rows 3-17

Repeat row 2 (3 dc), at the end of row 17 do not ch 2, do not cut yarn, continue using the same yarn to make the border – do NOT cut the yarn.

KIMONO – BORDER

Helpful hint: the border at the bottom of the kimono is made by continuing with the same yarn used to make the edge band, and the first 3 dc’s of this round are worked into the stitches from round 17 of the kimono and form the first 3 stitches of the border round.

Round 18

Make a ss into the 1st dc (after the dc increase from round 17 at the side of the body), ch 1, dc into same st, dc 32, 2 dc into next st, dc 33, 2 dc into next st, ss into 1st dc (70 dc).

Round 19

Ch 1, crab stitch into the same st, crab stitch into next 69 sts (70 crab sts), cut yarn leaving a long tail to stitch the bottom of the body together when we attach the legs at the end of the pattern.

PANTS – GIRL

Make two and using colour (F) yarn loosely ch 26.

Round 1

Ss into the 1st ch, forming a circle, then ch 1, dc into same st, then dc into next 25 ch, ss into 1st dc (26 dc).

Round 2

Ch 1, dc into same st, dc into next 25 sts, ss into 1st dc (26 dc).

Rounds 3 – 5

Repeat round 2.

Round 6

Ch 1, dc into same st, dc into next 25 sts, cut yarn, nj and weave in ends. (26 dc).

Helpful hint: change to colour (G).

Round 7

Join with new yarn to 1st dc from previous round, ch 1, dc into same st, dc into next 25 sts, ss into 1st dc (26 dc).

Round 8

Ch 1, crab st into same st, crab st into next 25 sts, cut yarn leaving a long tail to stitch the paws to the sleeves in Part 6. (26 crab sts).

NECK

Using colour (A) join yarn to round 1 of the body with a slip stitch.
