The latest edition to the Melly Teddy Ragdoll Family is the Snowman Family Part 5, starring little Chilly – who is just too adorable with his ear warmers and scarf.  Although I live in Durbanville (which is a small town in Cape Town, South Africa), I do love snow and am definitely more a winter girl – nothing nicer than snuggling up in front of a fire with my family and playing card games and chatting, laughing and bonding.  Sadly, I have to pretend it is snowing outside, although it does rain heavily in winter and gets a bit chilly, and I might need to put on a cardigan LOL.  This pattern is for any snowman/winter/roasted marshmallow loving person.

The pattern includes the instructions to make dad, mom and little Chilly.

The pattern will be released in 6 parts over 2 weeks and you can get each part separately FOR FREE with the Crochet Along

PATTERN – SNOWMAN FAMILY PART 5

CHRISTMAS BEANIE – DAD

Worked in the round – so remember your stitch marker for this section.

Using colour (B)

Round 1

Make 10 hdc’s into the mc (10 hdc) DO NOT ss into 1st hdc, continue round 2 into next hdc from round 1 as we are working in the round.

Helpful hint: the reason I do this is so that there is no ugly join in the beanie – we will straighten up the stitches when we finish the last round – stick with me – I will show you how to do that 😊.

Round 2

Make 2 hdc’s into each of the next 10 sts (20 hdc).

Round 3

*make 2 hdc’s into next st, hdc into next st*, rep *.* 9 more times (30 hdc).

Round 4

*make 2 hdc’s into next st, hdc into next 2 sts*, rep *.* 9 more times (40 hdc).

Round 5

*make 2 hdc’s into next st, hdc into next 3 sts*, rep *.* 9 more times (50 hdc).

Round 6

*make 2 hdc’s into next st, hdc into next 4 sts*, rep *.* 9 more times (60 hdc).

Round 7

Hdc into next 60 sts (60 hdc).

Round 8-11

Repeat round 7 (60 hdc).

Round 12

Hdc into next 57 st, sc into next st, ss into next st, cut yarn, weave in ends.

Helpful hint: you will notice now that the edge has straightened slightly by doing this – and once we add the “rib” section – you won’t even notice it.

Change to colour (C).

Round 13

Join new yarn with a ss into any of the hdc’s from round 12 (I started immediately after the sc and ss of round 12), then make a dc into each of the next 60 sts (60 hdc).

Round 14

Ch 1, *make a fpdc around same st, then make a bpdc into next st, rep *.* 29 more times (30 fpdc, 30 bpdc), ss into 1st fpdc, cut yarn, leaving a long tail to stitch the beanie onto the head in part 6.

Helpful hint: we will stitch the hat onto the head in part 6.

CHRISTMAS BEANIE – MOM

Using colour (C) chain 5 – worked in the round after the ribbing is made.

Helpful hint: leave a long tail (40cm) to stitch hat to head when finished – the following 31 rows are worked in the back loop only and create a “ribbed” effect.

Row 1

hdc into 2nd ch from hook, hdc into each rem ch, ch 1, turn (4 hdc)

Row 2 – 35

hdc into blo next 4 sts (4 hdc), cut yarn, stitch ends of rib together, weave in ends.

Helpful hint: slip stitch the two ends together to form a ring, turn work and continue to work in the round.

Using colour (C) join yarn to ribbed band, above where you stitched it together.

Helpful hint: join with a slip stitch to the “ribbed” band at the back, above the join – and when working into a row of hdc’s, work 3 stitches across 2 hdc stitches, to get the required number of stitches.

Round 1

ch 1, hdc into same st, hdc 53 sts evenly around the band, ss into 1st hdc (54 hdc).

Round 2

ch 1, hdc into same st, hdc into next 53 sts, ss into 1st hdc (54 hdc).

Round 3 – 4

Repeat round 2 (54 hdc).

Helpful hint: use stitch marker to mark the end of the rounds and work directly into the 1st hdc of round 4 for the beginning of round 5 – as we are now working in the round.

Round 5

hdc into 50 sts, hdc2tog, hdc2tog (52 hdc).

Round 6

hdc into 48 sts, hdc2tog, hdc2tog (50 hdc).

Round 7

hdc into 46 sts, hdc2tog, hdc2tog (48 hdc).

Round 8

*hdc2tog, hdc into next 4 sts*, rep *.* 7 more times (40).

Round 9

*hdc2tog, hdc into next 3 sts*, rep *.* 7 more times (32).

Round 10

*hdc2tog, hdc into next 2 sts*, rep *.* 7 more times (24).

Round 11

hdc into 22 sts, hdc2tog (23 hdc).

Round 12

hdc into 21 sts, hdc2tog (22 hdc).

Round 13

hdc into 20 sts, hdc2tog (21 hdc).

Round 14

hdc into 19 sts, hdc2tog (20 hdc).

Round 15

hdc into 18 sts, hdc2tog (19 hdc).

Round 16

hdc into 17 sts, hdc2tog (18 hdc).

Round 17

hdc into 16 sts, hdc2tog (17 hdc).

Round 18

hdc into 15 sts, hdc2tog (16 hdc).

Round 19

hdc into 14 sts, hdc2tog (15 hdc).

Round 20

hdc into 13 sts, hdc2tog (14 hdc).

Round 21

hdc into 12 sts, hdc2tog (13 hdc).

Round 22

hdc into 11 sts, hdc2tog (12 hdc).

Round 23

hdc into 10 sts, hdc2tog (11 hdc).

Round 24

hdc into 9 sts, hdc2tog (10 hdc).

Round 25

hdc into 8 sts, hdc2tog (9 hdc).

Round 26

hdc into 7 sts, hdc2tog (8 hdc).

Round 27

hdc into 6 sts, hdc2tog (7 hdc).

Round 28

hdc into 5 sts, hdc2tog (6 hdc) cut yarn, ss yarn tail through all 6 hdc’s, pull tight and weave in ends.

Helpful hint: I do not know about you but I CAN NOT make a pompom LOL – so I have come up with a cute alternative – you can make my “pompom” or add a tassel or make a real pompom – Just use your imagination and have fun.

Helpful hint: we will stitch the hat onto the head in part 6.

CROCHET POM POM – DAD & MOM

Make 1 for both mom and dad – using colour (B) for dad and (A) for mom make a mc.

Round 1

ch 1, make 6 hdc sts into the mc, ss into 1st hdc (6 hdc).

Round 2

ch 1, hdc 2 into same st, make 2 hdc sts into each st, ss into 1st hdc (12 hdc).

Round 3

ch 1, hdc2tog into same sp, hdc2tog into next 10 sts (6 hdc), cut yarn, ss around 6 sts, pull tight and stitch to the end of the hat.

EAR WARMER – CHILLY

MUFFS

Make 2 – using colour (F) make a mc.

Round 1

ch 1, sc 8 into mc, place st marker into 8th sc and continue to work in the round (8 sc).

Round 2

sc 2 into each st (16 sc).

Helpful hint: move the stitch marker and place in the last stitch of each row and this will help keep your stitch count correct and help with row counting, I have made this pattern more times than I can remember, and I still use a stitch marker otherwise I get my final stitch count incorrect, and because we are working quite tightly in the round, I weave my beginning tail in whist working round 3.

Round 3

*sc 2 into next st, sc into next st*, rep *.* 6 more times (24 sc).

Round 4

Sc into next 24 sc (24 sc)

Round 5-6

Repeat round 4 (24 sc), at the end of round 6, ss into next sc and cut yarn leaving a long tail to stitch to the head in part 6.

BAND

Make 1 – using colour (F) ch 4

Row 1

Sc into 2nd ch from the hook, sc into next 2 ch (3 sc), ch 1 turn

Helpful hint: the 1st chain in the row counts as the 1st single crochet.

Row 2

Sc into next 3 sts (3 sc), ch 1, turn

Row 3 – 18

Repeat row 2 (3 sc), cut yarn leaving a long tail to stitch the band to the head in part 6.

Helpful hint: we will stitch the ear warmers to the head in part 6.

SCARF – DAD

Helpful hint: if you would like to make a scarf for your girl then go for it – I just made an apron for her.

Using colour (C) chain 5

Row 1

hdc into 2nd ch from the hook, hdc into next 3 ch (3 hdc), ch 1, turn

Helpful hint: the chains at the beginning of the row count as the 1st hdc.

Row 2

hdc into next 4 sts blo (4 hdc), ch 1, turn

Helpful hint: this makes it look like rib – if you do not know how to make a stitch into the back loop only (blo) you can have a quick look at this Back Loop Only Photo Tutorial by clicking here.

Row 3 – 24

Repeat row 2 (4 hdc)

Row 25

Hdc into next 4 sts blo (4 hdc), cut yarn, weave in ends

Change to colour (B)

Row 26 – 49

Repeat row 2 (4 hdc)

Row 50

Hdc into next 4 sts blo (4 hdc), cut yarn, weave in ends

Helpful hint: using the opposite colour to each end, make 3 tassels using little pieces of yarn – I used 2 strands of yarn per tassel, each 7cm long, folded over.

Helpful hint: we will slip stitch the scarf onto the body in part 6.

APRON – MOM

Using colour (C) ch 18

Row 1

Sc into 2nd ch from hook, sc into next 4 ch, hdc into next 7 ch, dc into next 5 ch (5 sc, 7 hdc, 5 dc), ch 1, turn

Helpful hint: first 2 ch count as the 1st single crochet.

Row 2

Sc into 1st st, sc into next 16 sts (17 sc), ch 1, turn

Row 3

Sc into next 5 sts, hdc into next 7 sts, dc into next 5 sts (5 sc, 7 hdc, 5 dc), ch 1, turn

Row 4 – 15

repeat rows 2 and 3

Row 16

At the end of row 15 ch 1 but do not turn – make a (sc, ch 1, sc) into the same space, then work 2 sc into each dc st, and 1 sc into each sc st until you reach the next corner, then (sc, ch 1, sc) into same space and work 15 sc up the side of the apron until you reach the next corner, then (sc, ch 1, sc) into same space and work 13 sc along the top of the apron until you reach the next corner, then (sc, ch 1, sc) into same space and work 15 sc down the last side of the apron, ss into 1st sc, cut yarn and weave in ends.

Row 17 (apron tie)

Using colour (B) ch 20, then sc across the top of the apron (approximately 13 sts), then ch 20, cut yarn, and weave in ends.

Helpful hint: we will slip stitch the apron onto the body in part 6.

MISTLETOE – MOM

Make 2 – using colour (B) ch 9

Round 1

sc in the 2nd ch, hdc into next ch, dc into next 4 ch’s, hdc into next ch, sc in last ch (2 sc, 2 hdc, 4 dc), then make 3 ch, and ss into the 1st ch (picot stitch).

Helpful hint: you are not turning your work to the back, you are still working from the front, you are going to work into the chains on the other side of these stitches.

Round 2

sc into 1st ch, hdc into next ch, dc into next 4 ch’s, hdc into next ch, sc into the last ch, then ss into the 1st first sc, cut yarn, leaving a long tail to stitch leaf to the apron in part 6 (2 sc, 2 hdc, 4 dc).

Helpful hint: when we stitch the two leaves to the apron, we will make a few French knots in colour (A) – white to finish off the Mistletoe.

Row 1

hdc into 2nd ch from the hook, hdc into next 3 ch (3 hdc), ch 1, turn

Helpful hint: this makes it look like rib – if you do not know how to make a stitch into the back loop only (blo) you can have a quick look at this Back Loop Only Photo Tutorial by clicking here.

Row 3 – 49

Repeat row 2

Row 50
