Solid Granny Photo Tutorial

Looking for something different to make with your stash, or wanting to make quick and easy squares to use for charity blankets – then give the Solid Granny a try – loads of fun changing colours, and you can make it as big or as small as you like – the technique is the same, just remember to count your stitches and be careful not to miss the first stitch at the beginning of each row.

Solid Granny

Helpful hint: make the slip stitches loosely as you will be working into them in each of the following rows.

Round 1

Using any colour yarn make a mc, ch 2, dc 2, ch 1 *dc 3, ch 1*, rep *.* 2 more times, ss into 1st dc, ss loosely into corner.

Row stitch count: 3 dc

Corner stitch count: ch 1 in each corner

Total stitch count: 12 (excluding chains)

Round 2        

[ch 2, (counts as 1st dc) dc, ch 1, dc 2] into corner, *dc into next 3 sts [dc 2, ch 1, dc 2] into corner*, rep *.* 3 more times omitting last corner, ss loosely into corner.

Row stitch count: 3 dc

Corner stitch count: 2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc

Total stitch count: 28 (excluding chains)

Round 3

[ch 2, (counts as first dc) dc, ch 1, dc 2], *dc into next 7 sts [dc 2, ch 1, dc 2] into corner*, rep *.* 3 more times omitting last corner, ss loosely into corner.

Row stitch count: 7 dc

Corner stitch count: 2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc

Total stitch count: 44 (excluding chains)

Round 4

[ch 2, (counts as first dc) dc, ch 1, dc 2[, *dc into next 11 sts [dc 2, ch 1, dc 2] into corner*, rep *.* 3 more times omitting last corner, ss loosely into ch 1 corner.

Row stitch count: 11 dc

Corner stitch count: 2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc

Total stitch count: 60 (excluding chains)

Round 5

[ch 2, (counts as first dc) dc, ch 1, dc 2], *dc into next 15 sts [dc 2, ch 1, dc 2] into corner*, rep *.* 3 more times omitting last corner, ss loosely into corner.

Row stitch count: 15 dc

Corner stitch count: 2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc

Total stitch count: 76 (excluding chains)

Round 6

[ch 2, (counts as first dc) dc, ch 1, dc 2], *dc into next 19 sts [dc 2, ch 1, dc 2] into corner*, rep *.* 3 more times omitting last corner, cut yarn, nj, weave in ends.

Row stitch count: 19 dc

Corner stitch count: 2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc

Total stitch count: 92 (excluding chains)

Make it as large as you like, just make sure you count your stitches and do not forget the “hidden” stitch.  Cut your yarn, and use a needle join to finish off your square when it reaches the size you want it to be.
