PATTERN

RAINBOW UNICORN PART 1 – BOY & GIRL

HEAD

Lightly stuffed – working in the round

Using colour (B) yarn

Round 1

Ch 5, then make 2 sc into 2nd ch from hook, sc into next 2 ch, make 5 sc into last ch, now work down the opposite side of the ch, sc into next 2 ch, make 3 sc into the last ch (same ch you made the first 2 sc into), do not ss into 1st sc as we are working in the round (14 sc)

Helpful hint: move the stitch marker and place in the last stitch of each row and this will help keep your stitch count correct and help with row counting, I have made this pattern more times than I can remember, and I still use a stitch marker otherwise I get my final stitch count incorrect, and because we are working quite tightly in the round, I weave my beginning tail in whist working round 2.

Round 2

*Inc* into 1st st, sc into next 4 sts, *inc* 3 times, sc into next 4 sts, *inc* 2 times, do not ss into 1st sc as we are working in the round (20 sc)

Round 3

*Inc* 2 times, sc into next 4 sts, *inc* 6 times, sc into next 4 sts, *inc* 4 times, do not ss into 1st sc as we are working in the round (32 sc)

Round 4

Sc into next 13 sts, *inc* 2 times, sc into next 14 sts, *inc* 2 times, sc into next st, do not ss into 1st sc as we are working in the round (36 sc)

Round 5

Sc into next 14 sts, *inc* 2 times, sc into next 16 sts, *inc* 2 times, sc into next 2 sts, do not ss into 1st sc as we are working in the round (40 sc)

Round 6

Sc into next 14 sts, *inc* 1 time, sc into next 2 sts, *inc* 1 time, sc into next 16 sts, *inc* 1 time, sc into next 2 sts, *inc* 1 time, sc into next 2 sts, do not ss into 1st sc as we are working in the round (44 sc)

Round 7

Sc into next 44 sts (44 sc)

Round 8 – 10

Rep round 7 (44 sc)

Helpful hint: I love using the invsc2tog technique so if you would like to learn how to do it, here is the link Invisible Single Crochet Two Together Photo Tutorial

Round 11

*Invsc2tog, sc into next 9 sts*, rep *.* 3 more times (40 sc)

Helpful hint: we are going to work a short row now, so that the horrible “jog” between colour changes is underneath the chin of the unicorn.

Round 11 (a) short row

Sc into next 6 sts (6 sc), cut your yarn and weave in as you do round 12.

Helpful hint: do not finish the 6th st, take your new colour and finish the single crochet, and then make the 1st sc of the next round, the “jog” is a little better.

Change to colour (A) yarn

Round 12

Sc into next 40 sts (40 sc)

Round 13

*Inc into next st, sc into next 19 sts*, rep 1 more time (42 sc)

Round 14

*inc into next st, sc into next 6 sts*, rep *.* 5 more times (48 sc)

Round 15

*inc into next st, sc into next 7 sts*, rep *.* 5 more times (54 sc)

Round 16

*inc into next st, sc into next 8 sts*, rep *.* 5 more times (60 sc)

Round 17 – 26

Sc into next 60 sts (60sc)

Helpful hint: if you are using safety eyes you can insert them between round 14 and round 15 approximately 13 stitches apart, in the front of the face and if you are using embroidery thread you can make the eyes whenever it works best for you. Lie the face flat and place the eyes in your work – like in the photo.

Round 27

*invsc2tog, sc into next 8 sts*, rep *.* 5 more times (54 sc)

Round 28

*invsc2tog, sc into next 7 sts*, rep *.* 5 more times (48 sc)

Round 29

*invsc2tog, sc into next 6 sts*, rep *.* 5 more times (42 sc)

Helpful hint: you can stuff the head now, and then just add more in before you close off after the last round, the head should be firm, but not hard, think “squishy” 🙂

Round 30

*invsc2tog, sc into next 5 sts*, rep *.* 5 more times (36 sc)

Round 31

*invsc2tog, sc into next 4 sts*, rep *.* 5 more times (30 sc)

Round 32

*invsc2tog, sc into next 3 sts*, rep *.* 5 more times (24 sc)

Round 33

*invsc2tog, sc into next 2 sts*, rep *.* 5 more times (18 sc)

Round 34

*invsc2tog, sc into next st*, rep *.* 5 more times (12 sc)

Helpful hint: add more filling if you think you need too.

Round 35

*invsc2tog*, rep 5 more times (6 sc) cut yarn, ss into each sc and pull tight, cut a long tail, and use the tail to “pull” eyes together, and weave in ends.

EARS

Make two – not stuffed – worked in the round

Using colour (A) yarn make a mc

Round 1

ch 1 (does not count as a st), sc 6 into mc, place st marker into 6th st and continue to work in the round (6 sc)

Round 2

*sc 2 into next st, sc into next st*, rep *.* 2 more times (9 sc)

Helpful hint: move the stitch marker and place in the last stitch of each row and this will help keep your stitch count correct and help with row counting, and because we are working quite tightly in the round, I weave my beginning tail in whist working round 3.

Round 3

*sc 2 into next st, sc into next 2 sts*, rep *.* 2 more times (12 sc)

Round 4

*sc 2 into next st, sc into next 3 sts*, rep *.* 2 more times (15 sc)

Round 5

*sc 2 into next st, sc into next 4 sts* rep *.* 2 more times (18 sc)

Round 6

*sc 2 into next st, sc into next 5 sts* rep *.* 2 more times (21 sc)

Round 7

sc into next 21 sts (21 sc)

Round 8

*invsc2tog, sc into next 5 sts*, rep *.* 2 more times (18 sc)

Round 9

*invsc2tog, sc into next 4 sts*, rep *.* 2 more times (15 sc)

Round 10

*invsc2tog, sc into next 3 sts*, rep *.* 2 more times (12 sc)

Round 11 – 12

Sc into next 12 sts (12 sc)

At the end of round 12, ss edge stitches together (the reason for this is that the ears are not stuffed, and it looks neater when joining the ears to the head, cut yarn, leave long tail to attach to the head later.

HORN

Using colour (B) make a mc

Round 1

sc 3 (3 sc)

Round 2

*inc* into 1st st, rep 2 more times (6 sc)

Round 3

Sc into next 6 sts (6 sc)

Round 4

Repeat round 3 (6 sc)

Round 5

*inc, sc into next st*, rep 2 more times (9 sc)

Round 6

Sc into next 9 sts (9 sc)

Round 7

Repeat round 6 (9 sc)

Round 8

*inc, sc into next 2 sts* rep 2 more times (12 sc), ss into next st, cut long tail to use to stitch to the head in part 6.
