SPECIAL STITCHES

PATTERN

Squares

Make a total of 32 mini large squares

Round 1 – mini square

Helpful hint: make 2 small squares in each contrast colour (2 of each colour of the 16 contrast colours = 32 mini squares in total)

Using a any contrast colour make a mc, {(ch 3 – counts as 1st dc), dc 2, ch 2} rep 3 more times, ss into 3rd ch, cut yarn, weave in ends.

Stitch count: 3 dc per side – ch 2 in each corner

Total stitch count: 12 dc

Round 2 – joining mini squares

Make a total of 8 squares

Helpful hint – take 4 mini squares and join into 1 larger square (total of 8 when finished) I used a light and a dark colour to make my square.

Using colour (A) work 4 small squares into a larger square as you go along.

FIRST SQUARE: start in any ch 2 corner with a standing *(dc, dc 2, ch 2, dc 3)*, rep *.* 3 more times, ss into 1st dc, cut yarn, weave in ends.

Stitch count: 6 dc per side – ch 2 in each corner

Total stitch count: 36 dc

SECOND SQUARE: start in any ch 2 corner with a standing (dc, dc 2, ch 2, dc 3), dc 3 into next corner sp, ch 1, remove hook from st, place hook through the any corner sp from the FIRST SQUARE and pull up a loop, ch 1, make 3 dc into the same corner sp, remove hook from st, place hook through the sp between the 3 dc repeats of FIRST SQUARE, and pull up a loop, ch 1, make 3 dc into next corner sp, ch 1, remove hook from st, place hook through the any corner sp from the FIRST SQUARE and pull up a loop, ch 1, make 3 dc into the same corner sp, complete the rest of the square as normal.

Use the same technique to attach the next 2 mini squares.

Round 3

Using colour (B) make the square larger

Start in any ch 2 corner with a standing *(dc, dc 2, ch 2, dc 3), dc 3 between dc clusters from previous round, dc 2 into 1st ch sp, dc 2 into 2nd ch sp, dc 3 between dc clusters from previous row*, rep *.* 3 more times, ss into 1st dc, cut yarn, nj, weave in ends.

Stitch count: 16 dc per side – ch 2 in each corner

Total stitch count: 64 dc

Round 4

Using colour (C) make the square larger

Start in any ch 2 corner with a standing *(hdc, hdc, ch 2, hdc 2), hdc into next 16 sts*, rep *.* 3 more times, ss into 1st hdc, cut yarn, nj, weave in ends.

Stitch count: 20 hdc per side – ch 2 in each corner

Total stitch count: 80 hdc

You should now have 8 large squares which you can slip stitch together using colour (C) using the diagram below to help you.

Bottom border of crop-top

Round 5

Using colour (B) start in any ch 2 corner with standing *(dc, dc, ch 2, dc 2), sk 1st st, dc into next 18 sts, dc2tog over next corner, dc into next 19 sts*, rep *.* 3 more times, ss into 1st dc, cut yarn and weave in ends.

Round 6

Using colour (A) start in any ch 2 corner with standing *(dc, dc, ch 2, dc 2), sk 1st st, dc into next 19 sts, dc2tog over next corner (but omit the middle st from previous row – see first photo), dc into next 20 sts*, rep *.* 3 more times, ss into 1st dc, cut yarn and weave in ends.

Top border of crop top

Round 7

Using colour (B) start start in any ch 2 corner with standing *(hdc, hdc, ch 2, hdc 2), sk 1st st, hdc into next 19 sts, hdc2tog over next corner, hdc into next 19 sts*, rep *.* 3 more times, ss into 1st hdc, cut yarn and weave in ends.

Round 8

Using colour (A) start start in any ch 2 corner with standing *(sc, sc, ch 2, sc 2), sk 1st st, sc into next 19 sts, sc2tog over next corner, sc into next 19 sts*, rep *.* 3 more times, ss into 1st sc, cut yarn and weave in ends.

Straps

Using colour (C) start with a standing dc into the 1st sc of any ch 2 corner, hdc into next st, sc into the ch sp, hdc into next st, dc into next st, turn work (5 sts), ch 1, sc into next 5 sts, rep until strap is long enough, I did 28 rows of sc.

Last row make a dc, hdc, sc, hdc, dc, and then ss to the back of the top over the opposite side ch corner.

Repeat on the other side.

Edging

I made an additional two rows of single crochet all around the arm holes and the neck opening in different colours to add a bit of colour to the straps, this is optional – just remember to single crochet two together (sc2tog) into each of the corners.

Fringe

I used 2 strands from each colour, approximately 20 cm each, folded over per tassel, and added a tassel to each stitch all around the bottom of the crop-top – you can do whatever you like – make them all the same colour, use multiple colours per tassel, add more, add less – HAVE FUN with your tassels.
